Chris Carey, a senior from California Polytech University, Pomona used donated iglide® bearings on a portable machine for in-classroom use. The machine is designed to demonstrate the behavior of amorphous polymers under axial stress, specifically the local crystallization and alignment of the individual strands. Iglide bearings were used to support the machine’s drive roller, which pulled the amorphous polymer sample during testing. Iglide bearings are both lubrication and maintenance free and therefore were an excellent alternative to bronze bushings. Carey was extremely please with the performance of iglide bearings and reported, “The bearing was a perfect fit and installation was extremely easy.” Iglide bearings are made of high-performance plastics and are resistant to dirt, dust, chemicals and UV rays. Igus stocks more than 6,000 metric and standard bearing sizes and styles, all of which are available to students as free samples for school projects. |
