For the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) Design/Build/Fly Competition, students from California State Polytechnic University built a CNC hot-wire cutter. The AIAA-sponsored competition challenges students to design, build and demonstrate the flight capabilities of an unmanned, remote-controlled aircraft.

Because teams also are expected to use practical and affordable manufacturing processes, the students decided to build their own CNC hot-wire cutter to aid them in the building process. By using free donations from igus®, the team was able to use high-performance components without violating the rules of the competition.

Iglide® plastic clip bearings reduced friction between the y and x carriages and guide rods of the unit and enabled smooth, precise computer-controlled motion. California State Polytechnic competed against 43 other teams from around the globe and placed 23rd.
