Project: Build a portable gantry crane
Product used: Energy Chain

During the 2003-04 school year, students at Georgia Technical Institute designed and constructed a minicrane with the help of an Energy Chain System®.

The project’s purpose was to create a portable gantry crane to teach input shaping concepts and an experimental testbed for new input shaping algorithms. The device was built at Georgia Tech and used at Georgia Tech Loraine in France as an instructional tool in engineering classes.

The team used an Energy Chain to carry the signal and power cables to the hardware on the moving axes of the minicrane. The minicrane has been, and will continue to be, used for both research and educational endeavors. In the future, Georgia Tech plans to use the minicrane as a demonstration tool at conferences and universities, among other things.
