Lake Superior University engineering students from both the present and future will benefit from one group’s 2006 senior design project. Team CAPT (Computer Aided Plasma Torch) designed and built a CNC Plasma Torch for the university’s Manufacturing Processes Laboratory, which will be available for students to use for years to come.

The CNC machine enables students to easily cut various types of metal into different shapes and sizes. To protect vital cables on the machine from hot chips and sparks created during the cutting process, Team CAPT used donated Energy Chain®, an all-plastic cable carrier designed to house, protect and extend the service life of cables and hoses attached to automated machinery.

Energy Chain enabled seamless transition from one axis to another and also gave the machine the industrial look the students were aiming to achieve.
