For their Advanced Topics in Design and Manufacturing class, students from the University of Missouri-Rolla designed and built a pen blotter that is capable of raising and lowering a writing instrument by using both a stepper motor and a solenoid. The team used a donated DryLin® N linear guide system to guide the X and Y movements on the device.

DryLin N is an excellent alternative to re-circulating ball bearings, as it is maintenance-free, self-lubricating and wear-resistant. DryLin N also boasts a low profile, which enabled the pen to maintain a close proximity to the paper’s surface. Due to their hard work and success, the Missouri-Rolla students received an “A” on the project.
