Students from the Université de Sherbrooke, a university located in Canada, competed in both the SAE Mini Baja East and Mini Baja Midwest Competitions with their rugged, off-road vehicle. The team designed and built the mini baja especially for the SAE event, which challenges students to apply skills learned in the classroom to a hands-on recreational vehicle project. While searching for components for the vehicle, the Sherbrooke team discovered igus® and its line of iglide® plastic bearings. Through its Y.E.S. (Young Engineers Support) Program, igus donated iglide J bearings to the mini baja project. Iglide J enabled the students to build a single pivot trailing arm rear suspension. Iglide J not only eliminated timely maintenance for the team, but also drastically reduced the weight of the vehicle. At the Mini Baja East Competition, the Canadian team placed 3rd against 60 other teams. The students delivered an even superior performance at the Midwest event, coming in 2nd out of 120 competing teams. The team won 1st place awards in the endurance race and cost categories and also were honored with the Polaris Suspension Innovation Award, among others.
