Project: Build an airplane
During the 2004/2005 school year, the University of British Columbia Super HeavyLift Team designed and constructed a plane for the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) Aero Design West. The team used iglide® plastic bearings in the nose of the aircraft in order to hold the main wheel axle in place in the nose gear fork. The bearings were used on the fork, and a bolt (supporting the wheel), passed through the bearings. The team reported that with iglide, there was an extremely low wear rate on the aluminum fork and bolts due to the elimination of metal-to-metal contact. The team at UBC showcased its plane at the SAE competition and was very successful, taking home first-place in the open-class overall competition. |
