Students from the University of British Columbia (UBC) competed in the Formula SAE West (Society of Automotive Engineers), an event that challenges students to design, build and race an open-wheeled racecar. UBC has been participating in Formula SAE since 1991. For the 2006 season, the UBC team consisted of 15 students who took on the SAE's challenge, along with 139 other teams from across the U.S.

With weight constraints and maintenance issues toping the team’s list of priorities, the team decided to use iglide® J plain plastic bearings donated by igus® . Because iglide J is made of lightweight, high-performance plastics, the bearings were an ideal alternative to bronze or metal bushings. Iglide J is employed on the anti-roll-bar support, which greatly reduced friction in the vehicle’s suspension. The bearings also were easy to install, which saved the team precious time.

The UBC students placed 42nd at the event and are already gearing up for future competitions. To learn more about the UBC Formula team, visit www.formulaubc.com.
