ISMA race car spoiler with plain bearings

iglide® self-lubricating bearings reduce maintenance and weight

Until recently, roof wing doors on the ISMA series race cars were automatically operated with two pneumatic cylinders depending on the vehicle speed. As the nitrogen gas collecting main has no lubricating effect, wear and function problems were a permanent challenge to the cylinders. Furthermore, it wasn't possible to replace the two cylinders with a single one, because the design solutions were too difficult.

The newly developed cylinder-lid/bottom fastening, using iglide® plain bearings, can be dismantled in about 20 to 30 seconds without using any kind of tool. By the use of iglide® plain bearings (which are also self-lubricating bearings), the cylinder is completely maintenance-free, and the weight can be reduced by about 10% of the original solution.
