Permitted p x v values

For iglide® R plastic bushings with 0.039 inches wall thickness in dry operation against a steel shaft, at 68° F, installed in a steel housing.

The development of the iglide® R as a bushing material focused on high performance and very low cost. Especially in the dry operation low coefficients of friction and wear were to be attained. Plastic bushings made of iglide® R are selectively supported by a combination of solid lubricants. The iglide® R material achieves extremely low coefficients of friction in dry operation and runs largely free of stick-slip effects.

Deformation under load and temperatures Deformation under load and temperatures

Compressive Strength

iglide® R plastic bushings were developed mainly for low to medium radial loads. The graph shows the elastic deformation of iglide® R with radial loads. Under the maximum permitted load of 3335 psi, the deformation amounts to 3.5%. A plastic deformation can be negligible up to this value. It is however also dependent on the period of exposure.

Maximum surface speed

fpm Rotating Oscillating Linear
Constant 157 118 689
Short-term 236 196 984

Permitted surface speeds

iglide® R plastic bushings are suitable for high surface speeds. Speeds of up to 32.8 ft/s are permitted in linear motions! Here too the specified maximum values can be achieved only with minimum pressure loads. The specified values show the speed at which due to friction an increase in temperature up to the long-term permitted value can occur.

Temperatures

The short-term permitted maximum temperature is 230° F, and the long-term application temperature is 194° F. With increasing temperatures, the compressive strength of iglide® R plastic bushings decreases. The graph clarifies this connection.

The temperatures prevailing in the bushing system have an influence on the bushing wear. The wear rises with increasing temperatures.

Temperature limits

Lower - 58 °F
Upper, long-term + 194 °F
Upper, short-term + 230 °F

Coefficients of friction dependent on the surface speed Coefficients of friction dependent on the surface speed, p = 108 psi

Friction and wear

The coefficient of friction declines like the wear resistance with increasing load. In contrast, a higher surface speed acts far less on the coefficient of friction of an iglide® R plastic bushing. iglide® R is suitable for applications in which high p x v values are induced mainly through the high surface speed and not as much through the surface pressure.

The coefficient of friction of iglide® R plastic bushings depends greatly on the shaft roughness. In the roughness range between 16 - 24 rms, the coefficient of friction reaches its optimal value. For values above and below this range, the friction of the bushing system increases quickly. Other shaft materials can be used without a large loss. Even with non metallic shafts, good results were obtained in tests. Ceramic and plastic shafts can also be used.

Shaft materials

The graphs show results of testing different shaft materials conducted with plastic bushings made of iglide® R.

In the low load range, the 440B, hard anodized aluminum, 1050 case hardened steel, free cutting and hard chromed shafts are the most suitable shafting partners for iglide® R plastic bushings. At higher loads, the hardened shafts such as 440B and 1050 case hardened steel are recommended

Installation tolerances

iglide® R plastic bushings are standard bushings for shafts with h-tolerance (recommended minimum h9).

After the installation in a housing bore with H7 tolerance, the inner diameter of the bushing automatically adjusts to the E10 tolerance.

Electrical properties

Specific volume resistance > 1012 Ωcm
Surface resistance > 1012 Ω

Chemical resistance

iglide® R plastic bushings can be used under various environmental conditions and in contact with numerous chemicals.

The iglide® R plastic bushings are not chemically altered by moisture absorption. However alteration of the features can occur according to water content. The iglide® R plastic bushings absorb up to 0.2% water through atmospheric humidity (73° F, 50% relative atmospheric humidity), and up to 1.1% in saturation in water.

Radioactive rays

iglide® R plastic bushings are radiation resistant up to a radioactive intensity of 3 x 10² Gy.

UV-resistant

iglide® R plastic bushings are resistant to UV radiation, but the tribological properties deteriorate with continuous exposure.

Vacuum

In vacuum, iglide® R degases. The use in vacuum is possible only limitedly.

Electrical properties

iglide® R plastic bushings are electrically insulating.
