Plastic bushings made of iglide® A180 are suitable for application in direct contact with foods. Hence they are the ideal solution for plastic bushing positions on machines for the food and packaging industries, the medical equipment manufacturing, for small equipment for households, etc. The iglide® A180 distinguishes itself also in wet cleaning or where process-dependent contact with wet media is the business of the day by its extremely low humidity absorption

Surface pressure

The iglide® A180 distinguishes itself also in wet cleaning or where process-dependent contact with wet media is the business of the day by its extremely low humidity absorption. Figure 7.2 shows the elastic deformation of iglide® A180 with radial loads. At the recommended maximum surface pressure of 4060 psi the deformation is less than 2.5%. A plastic deformation is negligible up to this radial load. It is however also dependent on the period of exposure.

Maximum surface speed

m/s Rotating Oscillating Linear
Constant 0,8 0,6 3,5
Short-term 1,2 1 5

Permitted surface speeds

iglide® A180 is developed for low surface speeds. Maximum speeds up to 0.8 m/s (rotating) and 3.5 m/s (linear) respectively are permitted for continuous application in dry operation. These specified values state the limits to which the long-term permitted temperature rises due to frictional heat. In practice these limit values are not always reached due to interactions.

Temperatures

The short-term permitted maximum temperature is +230° F. With increasing temperatures, the compressive strength of iglide® A180 plastic bushings decreases. Fig. 7.3 clarifies this connection. The temperatures prevailing in the plastic bushing system also have an influence on the plastic bushing wear.

Upper, long-term +194 °F

Friction and wear

Similar to wear resistance, the coefficient of friction also changes with the load. For iglide® A180 plastic bushings, the coefficient of friction µ decreases slightly with increasing load. Friction and wear are also dependent to a large degree on the shafting partner. Shafts that are too smooth not only increase the coefficient of friction, they can also increase the wear of the plastic bushing. For iglide® A180 a ground surface with an average roughness range of 16-24 rms is recommended for the shaft.

Shaft materials

The diagrams display a summary of the results of tests with different shaft materials conducted with plastic bushings made of iglide® A180.

The combination "iglide® A180/hard-anodized aluminum" clearly stands out. It attains good to excellent wear rates also with other shafts.

With Hard chromed shafts, the higher wear in pivoting applications is exemplary compared to rotating applications.

The graph clearly shows, in the example of the 304 stainless shafts, the direct increase in wear with rising load with "soft" shafts. The increase is hardly noticeable with hard shafts.

Please contact us in case the shaft material scheduled by you is not included in these figures.

Installation tolerances

iglide® A180 plastic bushing are standard bushings for shafts with h-tolerance (recommended minimum h9).

After the installation in a housing bore with H7 tolerance, the inner diameter of the plastic bushing automatically adjusts to the E10 tolerance.

Chemical resistance

iglide® A180 plastic bushings can be used under various environmental conditions and in contact with numerous chemicals. The table gives an overview of the chemical resistance of iglide® A180 plastic bushings at room temperature.

The iglide® A180 plastic bushings are not chemically altered by moisture absorption. However alteration of the features can occur according to water content. The iglide® A180 plastic bushings absorb up to 0.2% water through atmospheric humidity.

Radioactive rays

iglide® A180 plastic bushings are radiation resistant up to a radioactive intensity of 3 x 10² Gy. Higher radiations affect the material and can lead to the loss of important mechanical properties.

UV-resistant

iglide® A180 plastic bushings are resistant to UV radiation, but the tribological properties deteriorate with continuous exposure.

Vacuum

The iglide® A180 plastic bushings can be used in vacuum only restrictedly.

Electrical properties

iglide® A180 plastic bushings are electrically insulating.
