dryspin® high helix twin lead screw, 1.4301 (304) stainless steel

The dryspin® twin lead screw features opposing right-hand and left-hand threads meeting at the shaft's midpoint, driving two nuts symmetrically toward or away from each other from a single motor input — no synchronization hardware required. The thread itself is built on igus's patented dryspin® geometry: a flatter flank angle, rounded tooth profile, and asymmetric design co-engineered with igus's polymer nuts. The result is more efficient, vibration-free operation, and service life up to 30% longer than standard thread geometries. The screw is rolled from 1.4301 stainless steel, and like all dryspin® high-helix screws, this design is not self-locking and may require an ancillary brake or clamp to hold position under load.

When to Use It

• Packaging machinery: format adjustments for guide rails, fill heads, and lane dividers where symmetric, repeatable positioning saves changeover time
• Machine tool workholding: self-centering vises, chucks, and fixture jaws where balanced clamping force on both sides of a part is critical

When to Avoid It

• Single-direction linear motion: a standard lead screw is simpler and more cost-effective when symmetric actuation isn't needed
• Very high axial loads: twin lead screws are a precision motion solution; heavily loaded axes belong on ball screws or rack-and-pinion systems
• Passive load holding: the non-self-locking high-helix design cannot hold position under gravity or spring loads without a powered motor or external brake
• Long unsupported spans: shaft whip becomes a limiting factor at longer lengths, particularly in high-speed applications
