Miniature linear actuators & lead screws for hematology analyzer automation

Requirements for components used within medical equipment — such as hematology analyzers, also known as blood analyzers, or automated pipettes — are particularly strict. Not only do components need to be hygienic, they often need to function in particularly small spaces. This is why we offer miniature linear actuators and lead screw assemblies that completely eliminate the need for lubricating grease. drylin® miniature actuators and lead screws achieve this with self-lubricating plastic liners that also reduce noise and vibrations, resist corrosion, and extend service life. Custom solutions can even be configured online to ensure the best possible fit for your hematology analyzer or automated pipetting application.

Benefits:
  • Self-lubricating, grease-free
  • Clean and dry-running
  • Maintenance-free, reduced downtime
  • Reliably longer service life
  • Corrosion-resistant, quiet running
  • Compact, space saving
  • Custom options available

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q: Does igus® offer miniature actuators for limited installation space?

A: Yes, we offer a large variety of miniature actuators. Our actuators can be configured with various materials, lengths, and motor options according to application requirements like speed, load, and accuracy. Our miniature actuators are usually screw-driven. Thanks to our selection of various lead screw dimensions and pitches, we can offer the right speed-load ratio.

  • Q: Which types of medical applications are drylin® linear actuators,
    suitable for?

A: Our actuators are suitable for all types of handling and positioning applications in laboratory and pipetting automation, for example within hematology analyzers and other blood analysis devices.

  • Q: Which materials does igus® use in linear actuators for medical
    and laboratory technology?

A: For such applications, we usually use a mix of metallic components made of stainless steel (304, 316 series) or aluminum in combination with self-lubricating iglide® materials with optimized coefficients of friction.

  • Q: Why are drylin® linear actuators more suitable for laboratory
and medical automation than ball bearing actuators?

A: drylin® actuators are self-lubricating, maintenance-free, lighter than ball bearing actuators, corrosion-resistant, and delivered from stock.

  • Q: How accurate are miniature actuators from igus®?

A: Our miniature actuators are usually driven by a lead screw, giving them a positioning accuracy of +/-0.1mm.

  • Q: What certificates are available? How does igus® test their
    products?

A: igus® has the world’s largest “motion plastics” test lab where we perform over 15,000 tests per year. Click here for an overview of our test lab, certificates, and seals of approval.

  • Q: How do I choose a drylin® linear actuator?

A: You can use our online configuration tool or contact us directly for in-person application support to help choose the ideal linear actuator for your application.

  • Q: Are drylin® linear actuators available in standard lengths or
    are they built to order?

A: Our systems are designed to be modular to meet the needs of most applications using off-the-shelf components.

  • Q: I would like to automate the vertical adjustment of a pipetting needle
with an igus® miniature actuator. The axial load on the pipetting needle
is about 2N. The speed is about 0.04m/s. Which actuator would be
suitable for my application and what can I expect for service life?

A: Taking the above values into account, our SLNV actuator with a diameter/pitch ratio of 6.35x2.54 would be suitable. In combination with a NEMA 11 stepper motor, a service life of around 11,000,000 double strokes could be achieved. For similar application support, you can use our online configuration tool or contact us directly.
