LNG HYBRID Barge: Innovative project combines gangway with energy supply system

Becker Marine Systems initiated the innovative project of the world's first LNG HYBRID barge (seagoing vessel) with Aida Cruises to supply power to cruise ships during their port layover. So far, no shore-side power supply for cruise ships has been implemented in Europe, with the exception of Hamburg. The implementation of a permanently installed system is usually time-consuming and cost-intensive and has so far been avoided by the ports.

Problem

To supply power to a cruise ship, the LNG HYBRID barge must be connected to a corresponding connection box on the terminal premises. For this purpose, 4 power cables + 1 neutral conductor + 2 control lines + 1 optical cable must be transferred to land. In the Port of Hamburg, a regular tide (water level change) of approx. 3.6m, wave formation by passing ships and a steady movement of the LNG HYBRID barge must be taken into account. Furthermore, the requirements of IEC 80005 as well as shipbuilding class requirements must be implemented in terms of design and the weather conditions present in the port must be taken into account.
The installation space on the LNG HYBRID barge was severely limited and posed a particular challenge during development.

Solution

On behalf of Becker Marine Systems, igus developed for the first time an energy supply system with maritime acceptance by the classification society Bureau Veritas for the connection of the LNG HYBRID barge to the connection platform or connection box at the berth in the port of Magdeburg. The energy supply system also serves as a gangway or access to the barge. The system consists of the following assemblies: base, lifting element, tilting frame, swivel bearing, telescopic gear, energy chain (with cables and plugs). To ensure that the system is as low-maintenance as possible, the corresponding bearings were equipped with additional igus components such as the iglidur® plain bearing.
