Low-friction tribo-tape liner improves reliability in long-distance races

Mulberry has over 30 years of experience in conversion work for motor racing. The steel chassis of the four-seater Plus 4 has been completely rebuilt and put on its wheels from scratch using state-of-the-art, high-strength materials from the aerospace industry. During races, the rear springs and front suspension are usually heavily lubricated and oiled. On very dusty, sandy and dirty tracks, such as at an endurance rally, these components can fail prematurely as dirt and sand adhere to the lubricated parts. A defect in the rear leaf spring left the vehicle stranded in the Gobi Desert for four days in the last race.

"When I received a sample of the iglidur® Tribo-Tape with self-adhesive underside, it was a logical step for me to use it on the rear leaf springs," explains Simon Hall, CEO of Mulberry Fabrications. Previously, PTFE tapes were applied between the leaf springs to replace the lubrication. Under constant load, however, these tended to be pressed out. The Tribo-Tape consists of the material iglidur® A160, which is characterised by a low coefficient of friction, high wear resistance and self-lubricating specification. The material has a low weight, is easy to machine and also reduces noise development on the leaf springs, as the plastic absorbs shocks.

Mulberry sourced a brand new set of Morgan leaf springs and dismantled them. The individual leaves were carefully deburred and polished on the sliding surfaces. Tribo tape was then cut to size and attached to each leaf. Finally, the elements were reassembled. "The first tests showed a significant reduction in the friction coefficient thanks to the Tribo-Tape. This should also contribute to a more comfortable ride and prevent the risk of mechanical failure and premature wear due to dirt," says Hall.
