Modular Cable Management for Offshore Drilling Rigs

• Requirements: Develop a safe cable routing solution for a cantilever travel of 57.4 ft (17.5 m) and a drilling floor skid travel of 26.2 ft (8 m), accommodating an additional cable load of 134 lbs/ft (200 kg/m).

• Success for the customer: The E4.1 polymer cable carriers provide high structural stability while minimizing their overall system weight. Their corrosion-resistant design makes them particularly well suited for demanding offshore environments, including exposure to saltwater, wind, and harsh weather conditions.

Modular drilling rigs are often used when additional drilling equipment must be installed on fixed offshore platforms. These mobile drilling units are equipped with the systems required for station positioning and precise drill pipe placement.

A large cantilever travels across the platform to position the drill pipe accurately above the well location. To ensure reliable movement of the cantilever and drilling floor, robust cable management systems are essential.

In this application, the cantilever is required to travel 57.4 ft (17.5 m), while the drilling floor must accommodate 26.2 ft (8 m) of travel. The cables impose an additional load of approximately 134 lb/ft (200 kg/m), creating significant demands on the cable routing system.

Given the harsh offshore environment, the solution also needed to be highly durable, corrosion-resistant, and as lightweight as possible to minimize overall system weight while ensuring long-term operational reliability.

Two igus® E4.1 series e-chains were selected to safely move the cable load of the cantilever. Specifically, the decision was made in favor of the e-chain series E4.350.

With its large dimensions, it is the largest polymer energy chain that has been installed on a boom and drilling floor. It is not only stable, but also designed to optimize the use of installation space. This saves weight and reduces the drive energy required on the drilling rig. The heavy-duty cable carrier can easily handle the high weight of the boom's cable.

To reduce the cost and installation time, both e-chains were pre-assembled on the drilling platform at the igus factory in Cologne.
