Even stainless steel corrodes

Application

SCS Deutschland is a specialist in the field of components and assemblies for mechanical unlocking systems. They produce Bowden cables, plastic injection molded parts, and unlocking units for customers from industry and the automotive sector. In this application the extruded material (cable for Bowden cables) coming from the extruder is fed through a trough with well water to cool down. The cable is guided by rollers that run with pressed-in stainless steel ball bearings without seals.

Problem

The extruder rollers run completely under water. A stainless steel version began to corrode after a very short time and had to be replaced at regular intervals.

Solution

There was a 1:1 replacement of the stainless steel ball bearing with a maintenance-free and corrosion-free xiros plastic ball bearing with glass balls. They have been in permanent use ever since.
